Social Kitchen Practicum 2.0: Fourth Space
Course Description
Summary
Social Kitchen Practicum 2.0: Fourth Space. In our digital age, the physical spaces where we gather are more vital than ever. This course explores the Social Kitchen as a "fourth space"—a restorative, physical environment outside of home, work, or school dedicated entirely to human connection, socialization, and community building. Operating as an open civic commons, this kitchen lab functions as an equitable space where students foster a true sense of belonging through anti-racist and cross-generational affinity frameworks. Students will investigate how cooking, collective meal sharing, and the exchange of diverse cultural food traditions can break down social barriers, dispel stereotypes, and promote deep mutual respect. Through hands-on collaboration, participants will examine how these inclusive physical environments serve as essential frameworks for societal cohesion, cultural appreciation, and democratic community organizing.
The Social Kitchen courses are part of Critical Kitchen Pedagogy, a conceptual framework developed by Visual Arts faculty member, Yoko Inoue. This pedagogy integrates interdisciplinary contemporary art practices to create experiential learning spaces that consider food as both a physical material and a subject for research and creation. Course material is deeply anchored in the cultural discourse and socio-political context of food. Assignments and projects will be pursued through interdisciplinary creative methodologies, including object making and socially engaged art practices.
