Christians, Muslims, and Jews in Medieval Spain
HIS2143.01
Course Description
Summary
In the Middle Ages, the Iberian peninsula was a fascinating confluence of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cultures. At times antagonistic, at times cooperative, at times positively cozy, the chemistry between these three cultures was red-hot, gorgeous, and endlessly creative. In this course, we will use a variety of primary sources to examine the development of tri-cultural Iberia from the end of Roman rule to the transformative and calamitous events of 1492. Students will be expected to complete weekly reading assignments (~150 pages) as well as a midterm paper and a final paper or project.Prerequisites
None.
