Course Description
Summary
This course invites students to explore how the Chinese female has been represented differently from the early 20th century to the present in various literature, films, and visual arts. Students will also investigate the changing historical, social, and cultural contexts that have caused the different representations and misrepresentations of individual and/or collective Chinese female images. By looking at these female (mis)representations in a critical way, students will be able to also understand the changing thoughts and values in different historical periods of Chinese society. Students are encouraged to conduct their own research about Chinese women and present their research to the class at the end of the semester.
Note: this course is entirely remote, and will be held synchronously.
