Course Description

Summary

Pull up a chair, open your ears, and dive into the powerful, genre-blurring sound worlds of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis. This inclusive, one-credit course is built around deep collective listening and open conversation. Together, we will explore how Davis bridges jazz, chamber music, and opera to tell vital stories about American history, civil rights, and social justice.

We will listen through major works such as X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X and Central Park Five, unpacking the stories behind them and the social contexts that inspired their creation. The course is guided by percussionist Leah Bowden, who brings a uniquely personal perspective to the classroom having studied and collaborated directly with Davis, and performed in the world premieres of two of his operas. There are no heavy analytical requirements or musical background needed—just bring your curiosity, your listening ears, and a readiness to discuss how music can challenge, heal, and move us.
