Course Description

Summary

Early exploration of foreign languages and cultures is gaining increasing attention nationwide. This seven-week course is intended to help students gain a basic understanding of language and culture teaching to young children. Students will explore theories and pedagogical techniques, develop lesson plans and units, and implement them in class. Students will create, share, and assess their peers’ learning units. Students interested in teaching at the Village School of North Bennington or at Bennington Elementary School are especially encouraged to register. Working with local language teachers and program administrators, students who choose to teach foreign languages in the elementary classroom during the second seven weeks will do so through a group tutorial with one of the course instructors and will receive two additional credits. This course, taught in English, is applicable to the teaching of all languages. 2 credits / 4 credits for students who teach. Corequisites: There will be an information session on Thursday, May 3rd (2018) from 6:30 - 7:00pm in Barn 100 for all students interested in this course.
