CNC Fabrication: Modeling and Milling with Rhino 8 (Beta)
Course Description
Summary
CNC Fabrication: Modeling and Milling with Rhino 8 is an intermediate course in Digital Fabrication focused on Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) routing and the end-to-end workflow from digital model to fabricated object. This course will cover 3D modeling in Rhino 8 with an emphasis on designing for sheet material, including joinery, nesting, and toolpath-ready geometry. Students will learn to operate the CNC router safely and confidently, developing fluency in machine setup, speeds and feeds, material selection, and toolpath programming. The course will address safety protocols, routine maintenance, and best practices for working with sheet goods. Through a series of structured projects, students will build both technical proficiency and design sensibility, learning to consider how fabrication constraints can inform and strengthen creative decisions. This course uses small foundational projects to reinforce the skills needed to complete a student-designed project, progressing from concept through model to a fully fabricated CNC-cut piece.
Learning Outcomes
- Gain a working knowledge of the Computer-Aided Design software Rhino 8 as it relates to CNC machines.
- Understand the different workflows and outputs associated with the modeling and fabrication programs.
- Build experience translating 3D models into CNC-cut objects.
- Gain proficiency in SAFELY operating and maintaining the CNC equipment.
Prerequisites
Any 2000 level sculpture class OR Thinking and Modeling in Rhino 8.
