Course Description

Summary

This course is recommended for all students considering working in sculpture and interested in mild steel design/fabrication methods. It is open to anyone with a curiosity about materials and building processes. There are fundamental introductions to gas, arc, electric welding, forging, fabrication techniques like cutting and grinding steel, and general shop safety. Please note that this course will require additional materials to be purchased by the student, ex. Jacket, gloves, hat and safety glasses.

This class is a lab style course in its design. There will be up to an additional 3-5 hours per week outside of class time, needed to perform all the tasks/assignment for the duration of this course.

This is a project based class directed at technical practice through both knowledge and understanding of mild steel properties as well as building upon your implicit/muscle memory with repetition and practice.

The projects will have very clear limitations as to how they will be evaluated. Your class participation will also be evaluated by your attitude towards engagement with others and response to class open discussion. This primary project will be for you to fabricate a sealed steel container that will hold water.

This means you will be hand cutting the plate steel, grinding a finish edge to the material and welding it together. The welding procedures will exist as a mix between gas welding and arc welding. The final product will be ground down to a finished quality object/ thus/ ticking off all requirements.
