Course Description

Summary

Performance Pedagogies of Dance (PODs) courses offer students the opportunity to make connections through multiple access points, linking studio practice, choreographic research processes and performance. Through participation in choreographic projects facilitated by faculty and guest artists, PODs are designed to help students recognize tools, practices and processes that can be used in their own creative work both as performers and choreographers. Structurally each POD is identified by a unique topic and moves students through intensive research and rehearsal sessions. PODs have required meeting times that may include weekends and maintenance rehearsals. Each POD course culminates in a public showing.

Students taking a POD course for 2 credits will complete all scheduled sessions, maintenance rehearsals and performance requirements. Students taking a POD course for 3 credits will, in addition to the requirements listed above, need to complete 14 hours of Production LAB work which may include working tech for performances, assisting with costuming processes, front of house management and work in other production related roles.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will recognize and activate modes of learning that surface through the act of dance-making and dancing: interdependence through shared training, resilience, possibility.
  • Students will develop relationships to practice and performance as research.
  • Students will shape and participate in processes of critical feedback and self-reflection.
