Course Description
Summary
Jazz composition styles have been steadily evolving over its 100+ years of existence. With blues always at the core, contrapuntal approaches have come full circle. By first reviewing the evolution of jazz styles, then focusing on composition approaches currently being utilized by today’s emerging jazz artists, this course will examine modern approaches to form, rhythm, harmony and melody. Composition projects will explore various techniques evident in today’s music. Student presentations will inform the class about the body of work created by various contemporary artists.Prerequisites
Students should have a good understanding of music notation (reading and writing) and also have a basic knowledge of music theory (intervals, chord structures). Permission of Instructor.
