Course Description
Summary
This course is a thematic seminar of Chinese ink painting, focusing on the development of the pictorial tradition of landscape from the tenth century to the nineteenth century. Along with the discussion of the history of landscape painting, we will explore various types of landscapes including the topographical landscape, the idealized or imaginary “mind landscape,” the sacred landscape, the landscape of famous places, the landscape in the styles of ancient masters, and printed landscape painting manuals in the consideration of their socio-political, intellectual, and religious implications.Prerequisites
