Course Description
Summary
Early exploration of foreign languages and cultures is a powerful tool towards social justice and intercultural understanding. This will be particularly important for a class age (6-11) that will have been significantly deprived of the practice of fundamental socialization skills because of Covid. This course is intended to help students gain a basic understanding of language and culture teaching to young children. Working with local language teachers and program administrators, students will have an opportunity to teach foreign languages and cultures to elementary school children.
Students will explore theories and pedagogical techniques, develop lesson plans and units, and implement them in class. Students will create, share, and assess their peers’ learning units. Students interested in teaching in local schools are especially encouraged to register. This course, taught in English, is applicable to the teaching of all languages and cultures.
