Course Description
Summary
Projects in Design | Costume | Scenic | Light
Calling all designers! This course provides an accredited platform for advanced & intermediate produced, semi produced and research work in scenic, costume, lighting and design.
In this course, students can develop designs for advanced projects, student drama productions, or senior dance concerts. Participants may also contribute “guerrilla” or “low-tech” concepts to the Bennington Fringe through collaborations with Little Theater/Big Ideas and Something from Nothing. Students are welcome to apply with existing projects, ongoing advanced work, or simply a desire to engage in the design conversation and collaboration.
For those focused on theory, the Design Den can serve as a hub for historical research of objects, design movements, textiles, garment history and be used to explore how objects and environments reflect and shape societal values.
Class Structure:
- Studio sessions for hands-on fabrication and research.
- Peer feedback and one-on-one faculty critiques.
- A mini-gallery exhibition showcasing produced work from design through production or research findings.
Please note Senior students will be offered a designated desk and locker for their advanced work.
Learning Outcomes
- The class will engage the student in every capacity: inquire, research, create, engage, and communicate.
- Develop skills refining their design work/research and ability to execute and refine their intention.
- Honing their ability to collaborate and communicate effectively
- Create organizational structure for their creative process.
- Students will serve as an artistic cohort of fellow creative makers for each other
Prerequisites
Priority will be given to students with a strong background in the design process, collaboration, and production/research.
Completion of at least one 4000-level design course or experience designing a student/faculty production.
Statement of Interest: To be considered for a design role and enrollment, please complete this form by November 13th, 2026.
Exceptions: Students below the 4000-level should email the professor with a portfolio or work sample for consideration.
