Course Description

Summary

This is an intensive seminar on films about film, films that undo themselves, films that analyze their own methods of construction, and films that examine the assumptions of filmic grammar. The course is a primer on film theories through the work of the filmmaker-as-theorist such as  Harun Farocki, William Greaves, Straub and Huillet, Jean-Luc Godard, Laura Mulvey, Juan Downey and more. 

This course meets during the 3rd module only. 
Tues 2:10-5:50pm for Lectures and discussion and M/Thurs 7:00 to 8:50 for screening and discussion

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze self-reflexive and meta-cinematic strategies in films that foreground their own construction and conditions of production.
  • Interpret key film theory concepts through the work of filmmaker-theorists
  • Evaluate how films critique or dismantle conventional film grammar, including narrative continuity, authorship, and spectatorship.
  • Articulate the relationship between filmmaking and theory as mutually constitutive practices.
