Course Description
Summary
We will engage in an investigation of textual analysis for performance of Shakespeare: scansion, rhythm, sense stress, image work, phonetic phraseology, etc. We will study the structure of the verse and the elements of rhetoric as the primary source for an actor’s investigation and performance of a role. We will explore techniques for enlivening that analysis in the performer’s body. We will study how heightened language combined with personalization, characterization, and the actor-audience relationship informs the physical, vocal, emotional, and intellectual responsiveness of an actor. Course content will focus on sonnets, speeches, and soliloquies.
Tools: Students will need a device that allows synchronous participation during designated class time via Zoom, a solid internet connection for group exercises, a private space with the ability to make noise: foolish, emotional, loud. The ability to make hard copies of text (i.e. download print) will greatly streamline assignments. To get the fullest experience, if possible, you will want to have enough room so your full body is visible.
