Summary
The Book of Deuteronomy and the Book of Jonah are two pivotal books of the Bible. The former stands apart from the first four books of the Bible as a retelling of what previously occurred according to the text. In that retelling changes were made to many relevant topics and issues essential for the advancement of public well being. We will explore those areas ranging from humans the environment, the setting up a judicial system, wages, human treatment of animals, society's responsibility to the poor, to safe building standards, etc. The Book of Jonah, only four chapters long, is where the Bible pivots from one theological understanding to another and the insuring tensions that arise in Jonah. This course will also look at how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam understand Jonah. Contemporary commentaries and insights will also be used during the course.
