Mapping Public Art, Performance and Intervention

Course Description

Summary

This course will examine public art , performance and intervention in urban and rural settings of different regions. Historically what have been some of the practices in these communities? What are some of the contemporary practices presently? What happens in communities built around conflict? The class will look at art, performance and intervention in cultures that emphasize collectivism and others that allow individualism. In studying and mapping the art practices of various regions , the class will collect data to learn about its effectiveness, its challenges and how it engages around issues of health, the environment, the social and political and human rights. Field Component: This course will continue to engage in building the relationship between Bennington College and Joudour Sahara, the music school in the south Sahara, M'Hamid El Ghizlane, Morocco, with cultural exchange and online discussions.
