Course Description

Summary

Students in this course will explore the impact of culture, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and other factors on the counseling process. The course emphasizes developing cultural competence and sensitivity, as well as addressing issues of power, privilege, and oppression. Students will engage in self-reflection and case studies to deepen their understanding of working with diverse populations. Students will explore the cultural and social aspects inherent in the foundations and theories of expressive arts therapy.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate cultural competence in the application of Expressive Arts Therapy, analyzing how factors such as culture, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status influence both the therapist’s approach and the client's engagement in the therapeutic process.
  • Critically evaluate issues of power, privilege, and oppression in the context of Expressive Arts Therapy, developing strategies for addressing these dynamics in counseling work with diverse populations.
  • Integrate cultural and social narratives into the practice of Expressive Arts Therapy, exploring how different cultural backgrounds and social contexts inform the foundations, theories, and application of creative modalities in therapeutic settings.
