Course Description

Summary

For anyone who wishes to perform work involving movement – dancers, actors, performance artists, etc. – this course is dedicated to developing a deep internal understanding of any action. We will explore nuance – subtle shades of timing, gesture, impulse, and manner of moving. No matter what the circumstance, performing requires a responsive, full mind-body presence in a particular place at a particular time for a particular purpose. The performer pays attention not only to the material at hand, but also to the overall intention, and incorporates the impact of the surrounding environment. There are so many things to consider. The mind is in motion, and we constantly adapt.

Creating a score for performance requires articulation of multiple details – i.e. movement, spatial use, time factor, and shifts of focus. In this course, each student will create a series of short works (Mini-Projects) and explore multiple ways they can be performed. We will uncover and unpack the what and the how. At times, students will form teams to complete short on-site exercises. All students will be contributing their own perspectives and approaches and working toward their own understanding of the work at hand.
