Intermediate Design Studio: Manual and Digital Representation
Course Description
Summary
This course starts with a series of directed assignments through which you will practice a variety of manual and digital drawing and modeling skills. As the group becomes familiar with a common representational language, we will segue into a term-long architectural design project employing digital and handmade drawings and models. You will work individually, in pairs, and at times in groups with a focus on working together, and creating a supportive studio environment.
Visual and architectural design is inherently collaborative work, and the process of turning ideas into images, and images into objects usually involves a number of people. This course gives you the opportunity to experience the studio as a place where unified techniques of making and evaluating can be used to share a diversity of approaches and opinions toward a shared project. Lately, things we might take for granted like headphones and remote work encourage the isolation of individuals who may (theoretically, or on paper) be part of a team. A primary aim of this studio is to give ourselves permission to take pleasure (despite all the challenges) in working with other people.
Prerequisites
Prior coursework in architecture or design OR an application with someone who has this background.
To apply for a spot in the course, please send a statement of interest (500 words or less) and a couple of work samples to farhadmirza@bennington.edu at least a week prior to 4000 level registration. If you have no prior architecture or design coursework, you may apply as a team of two with somebody who does.
