Course Description

Summary

The class will meet weekly for 12 lectures, workshops, and performances on a wide range of musical topics, given by faculty and visiting speakers on a rotating basis. The course will provide snapshots into musical performance and scholarship, across genres, cultures, and histories. Classes will consist of active participation, even performance, in everything ranging from opera, film, electronics, and performances. Students of all musical levels are welcome in this class. Assignments will consist of writing weekly responses to the lectures.

  • Learn about music performance and culture across genres and styles.
    Hear from a diverse panoply of scholarly, performative, and creative musical artists.
    Write about and actively participate in music creation.
    Learn to write articulately about music.
