Course Description

Summary

This course provides graduate students with an immersive, mentored experience in contemporary dance pedagogy and higher education. Teaching Assistants work alongside faculty in undergraduate dance courses, supporting classroom learning, facilitating discussions and movement-based practices, offering feedback, and assisting with rehearsals and course preparation. Through regular faculty mentorship, students engage with curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, collaborative teaching, and reflective practice, while participating in Dance Discipline meetings, workshops, performances, visiting artist activities, and departmental events. The course supports professional development for future careers in teaching, advising, and leadership.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assisting faculty in undergraduate dance courses through classroom support, preparation, and organization.
  • Working directly with students under faculty supervision by facilitating discussions, offering feedback, supporting rehearsals, or assisting with movement-based learning.
  • Meeting regularly with supervising faculty outside of scheduled class times to reflect on teaching practices, course planning, and pedagogical approaches.
  • Participating actively in the intellectual and artistic life of the Dance Program by attending weekly Dance Discipline meetings and Dance Workshop sessions.
  • Assisting with discipline events, visiting artists, public programs, dance concerts, technical rehearsals, and performances.
  • Developing an understanding of curriculum design, collaborative teaching, and the administrative dimensions of higher education in the arts.

Prerequisites

Enrollment in MFA Dance program and permission of instructor.
