Group Tutorial: Community Building Through a Documentary Practice

Course Description

Summary

This tutorial will be a documentary practice under CAPA where students spend a term building the ethical framework and production for a community-facing documentary series, while simultaneously making the first episodes of that series on campus and possibly moving into the surrounding community throughout the term.

We will meet with faculty to review work once a week, discuss field decisions, and plan ahead. The remaining hours are split across production: filming on campus and in the surrounding community, editing, field documentation, and preparation for the following week. Early in the term students will develop a consent and release form and an ethics statement that govern how the work is conducted with the local community.
