Course Description

Summary

How do drum beats travel, mutate, and survive? This performance-driven lab traces the sonic pathways of the African diaspora, transforming historical inquiry into hands-on kit playing. The modern drum set is a physical fusion of instruments from across the globe—each carrying its own distinct cultural lineage. To truly master the kit, contemporary players must become informed, adaptive percussionists who understand how these disparate elements shaped global music history and practice. Focusing on vital intercultural hubs like Cuba, New Orleans, New York, and Brazil, we will approach the drum set as a living archive of innovation, memory, and resistance. Designed for intermediate to advanced kit players, this workshop brings deep, critical listening directly into the practice room. Through immersive weekly labs and creative performance challenges, students will unpack the individual histories built into the instrument, master foundational grooves, and build the stylistic competency required of the modern global drummer.
