Public Policy Forum: Rebuilding America
Course Description
Summary
The United States is experiencing unprecedented challenges that are destroying the foundations on which our society was built. Our strongest institutions are faltering under political pressure. The Supreme Court, once an independent arbiter of justice, is rudderless; making decisions based on political ideology rather than the law. The President and Congressional leadership are committed to dismantling social safety nets and slashing scientific investments in education and public health. All of this is contributing to the backsliding of American democracy and the destruction of our civil society.
The Center for the Advancement of Public Action (CAPA) at Bennington College refuses to normalize these actions. This requires convening the best thinkers and policy makers at all levels of government for ongoing dialogue. It demands partnerships with state, local, and federal governments. Most of all, it demands contemplating the actions and laws necessary to prevent further erosion of democracy and civil society and a commitment to share these ideas broadly.
Beginning this fall, we will gather and strategize with leading thinkers in the fields of journalism, higher education, law, voting rights, and public education and we want you at the table. Students will not only be a part of these conversations but will help organize and lead them. Join us as we work to rebuild from a period of upheaval and destruction.
