Course Description

Summary

This lab course offers a unique space for students to participate in collective cooking and socially engaged meals. To foster a close-knit group and build strong social bonds, this course emphasizes in-situ learning. Through the collaborative and repetitive process of food preparation, students will establish meaningful routines for sharing food stories.

Success in this course requires a high level of commitment to participatory activities and collaborative projects. Students must bring flexible thinking and adaptability to challenging situations. Throughout the term, the classroom dynamic will serve as a lens to explore both the challenges and benefits of building sustainable, collective relationships.

Scheduling & Course Scope:

The weekly lab consists of two hours, which align with events hosted by the Office of Student Life and International Student Services (ISS). Because this course centers on live events, some sessions will require extended evening hours and select weekends (not to exceed 14 total hours) for meal preparation and mandatory communal cleaning. Specific dates and times will be collaboratively finalized during class discussions at the start of the term.

This lab runs in conjunction with Social Kitchen: The Praxis of Food-Based Community. Students across both Social Kitchen courses will work together closely, collaborating on joint projects and supporting student leaders within International Student Services (ISS).

Learning Outcomes

  • Build collaborative relationships and enhance team adaptability.
  • Master the praxis of collective kitchen management
  • Evaluate the structural friction, personal commitments, and ultimate benefits of building sustainable, student-driven communities.
