Two Suitcases: Advanced Projects in Sound
Course Description
Summary
Pioneering artist Maryanne Amacher kept her innovative sonic compositions in just two suitcases. Wherever she went to set up her "Sound Joined Rooms" exhibitions, she brought with her these two suitcases to probe and test the architecture with sound. This course takes Amacher’s “Mini Sound Series” as a lens to look at the inbetweenness of Sound Art - a discipline between the live event and the exhibition, between durational performance and non-durational installation. We will examine Amacher’s work through partial restaging of early works, and students will then develop their own compositions to be presented in a collaborative exhibition. This course is for students interested in portability, sound art, synthesis, and multiple sound-related areas that straddle discipline. A previous course or experience in sound synthesis or electronics required.
