Course Description

Summary

Lighting design has the powerful ability to shape the experience of an audience. Its practice incorporates elements of artistry and craft, and should interest those working in all aspects of visual and performing arts.  In addition to hands-on work with theatrical lighting equipment in and outside of class, the course will explore text analysis, design conceptualization, and an introduction to lighting design documentation. The foundational qualities & functions of light will be investigated through demonstrations as well as individual and group projects. Regular reading (including two plays) and short writing assignments are included in the coursework. Because many class sessions will involve hands-on work with lighting equipment that cannot be made up, students are expected to be present and participate fully.
