Course Description

Summary

In conjunction with APA 4316: A Food Citizens Methodology Workshop: Social Kitchen For Collective Wellness course,  this practicum section offers a space where students can participate in collective cooking and socially engaged meals.

Acquisition of food knowledge and cooking skills are important for personal and collective empowerment. Bearing in mind that cooking is both knowledge and embodied practice, this practicum will engage in critical food studies and encourage students to practice in-situ learning. Our activities focus on strengthening a sense of self, building awareness or affirming cultural  identity through meals. Each session requires a high level of commitment to engage fully in collaborative projects and related participatory activities. Flexible thinking and adaptability to challenging situations will be needed for this course.

In addition to the published day and time (Friday, 7:00-8:50pm), we will adjust the schedule to some evening extended hours for preparation of meals and mandatory communal cleaning. Specific dates and hours will be determined by class discussions. Students do not need to register for the APA 4316: A Food Citizens Methodology Workshop: Social Kitchen For Collective Wellness course to take this practicum session but will be expected to collaborate with the students enrolled in the course and the leaders of the International Student Services.
