Human Sexuality for Counselors
Course Description
Summary
This course specifically addresses how mental health counselors can navigate discussions of human sexuality in the therapeutic context. Students will explore topics such as sexual health, intimacy, consent, and addressing sexual issues in clients with mental health concerns. Emphasis is placed on creating a non-judgmental, sex-positive counseling environment.
*Students in CMHC-EXAT must infuse expressive arts therapies into their coursework. This course may be used to satisfy "Advanced Topics in Expressive Arts Therapy."
*Students in CMHC-NT must infuse narrative therapy into their coursework, This course may be used to satisfy "Advanced Narrative Therapy Techniques" OR "Narrative Therapy Techniques with Specific Populations."
*Students in CMHC-SOGE must infuse their coursework with Sexual Orientation/Gender Expression specific topics into their coursework. This course may be used to satisfy "Advanced LBGTQIA+ Counseling Techniques."
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss the complexities of human sexuality, including sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual health, and intimacy within the counseling context.
- Identify and address common sexual concerns, including dysfunctions, sexual trauma, and desire discrepancies in clients with mental health concerns.
- Implement culturally competent and ethical practices when navigating discussions of human sexuality with clients.
