Open Score Ensemble
Course Description
Summary
In this class, we’ll play open-ended and comprov pieces, sourced from the last half-century as well as ones of our own making. Based on early ensembles such as the Fluxus and Scratch Orchestras, we’ll plumb piece from the open-form proto minimalism of Julius Eastman to the deep listening scores of Pauline Oliveros. Some relationship to an instrument, voice, or other sound-making device required, and some reading ability suggested though “score” here is used in a multidisciplinary dance/theater context, as a plan of action, a process. Towards the end we’ll consider technologically mediated scores such as sound walks or headphone pieces, and we’ll also create our own scores.
