Visual Storytelling: a Director/Designer Practice
Course Description
Summary
A World Building Workshop for Visual Storytelling
...Aka the design process
In this course, we investigate the porous boundary between directorial intent and the physical reality of the stage or screen. Rather than treating design as decorative, we approach it as a primary narrative engine—the "invisible" scaffolding that shapes how an audience perceives time and emotion.
This fast-paced, 7-week, intensive combines readings, in-class workshops, and peer feedback.
We encourage students to apply as a "creative cohort" (e.g., Stage Director/Designer, Co-Devisors, or Filmmaker/DP/Production Designer). These groups will focus on the transition from a conceptual "spark" to tangible production plans. We will honor the roles students applied within and challenge all participants of the collaboration to fully lean into creating the visual dramaturgy of the projects' design.
Cohorts will navigate the shift from ideation to fabrication, culminating in a final presentation that includes models, drafting, visual collages, and drawings. To bridge the gap between vision and reality, teams will also develop a working timeline and preliminary budget. This practicum serves as essential pre-production for spring projects in drama, film, or any collaborative visual media.
