Course Description

Summary

This ensemble-based course explores the intersection of live performance, experimental soundscapes, and dub aesthetics. Rooted in the traditions of dub music—including remix culture, delay and reverb manipulation, and bass-driven textures—students will create immersive sonic environments using a mix of acoustic instruments, electronic tools, field recordings, and live effects processing.

Participants will collaborate to develop and perform original compositions and reinterpretations that emphasize space, rhythm, and texture. The ensemble will focus on live improvisation, loop-based layering, and performance techniques drawn from sound system culture, ambient music, and experimental audio practices. Students will gain hands-on experience with effects units, mixing boards, DAWs, and MIDI controllers, as well as non-traditional instruments and found sound.

Open to instrumentalists, vocalists, electronic musicians, producers, and sound artists. No previous dub experience required, but a willingness to experiment and collaborate is essential.

Final Project: A live or recorded performance showcasing original ensemble pieces, incorporating dub techniques and immersive soundscape elements.
