Course Description

Summary

This course will introduce students to the history and approaches out of which Expressive Arts therapy has grown, amplifying the weaving of multiple modalities used in therapy that are consistent with intermodal practices. Accompanying these topics, research that has emerged in the past three decades that explores EXAT as being a brain-wise therapy will be discussed in some depth.

Learning Outcomes

  • • Demonstrate an articulation of the history of the arts, ritual, and community legacies out of which the Expressive Arts grew into the field of therapeutic practice.
  • • Describe and demonstrate an understanding of how intermodal expressive arts are a centerpiece to the practice of Expressive Arts Therapy.
  • • Articulate an understanding of how EXAT practices are now understood to be brain-wise practices, pulling from scientific evidence in neuroscience in particular.
