Course Description
Summary
In this introductory course, students will expand their understanding of electroacoustic music by creating their own sonic narratives. The topics will include but are not limited to: soundscape composition, beat-making practices, and electromagnetic and binaural field listening. We will look at recent music-making experiments during the time of COVID-19 and explore the creative ideas that can come from this new territory of remote art-making. There will be an emphasis on production and experiential learning through exercises and workshops. Along with readings and discussions, we will look at various examples from sound art and experimental music. This course is introductory; however, it is open for students who want to incorporate sound-based works in their interdisciplinary projects at any level.
For this course, we will meet synchronously in a remote setting once a week on Thursdays. There will be an opportunity to meet with the instructor one-to-one on Mondays at the designated course hours. This class will collaborate with B-rad (Bennington College’s radio station) to air students’ pieces.
Tools: Students should have access to a sound recording tool such as a field recorder or microphone and an audio interface, cell phones, etc. If students are using their phones as recording devices, they should have access to their sound files with their computer. Students should also have access to a computer that can run a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Audacity, Reaper, Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, and headphones.
