Course Description
Summary
*****Prerequisites Updated as of 2/11/2022*****
This seven-week intensive course is designed for students who may not have had the opportunity to enroll in fully studio-based introductory level painting courses in recent terms due Covid and the temporary shift to online teaching. Topics covered will be techniques and protocols for the use of VAPA and remote studios, including the safe-handling of oil painting materials, the safe handling of acrylic painting materials, the construction of stretcher-bars, stretching and priming canvas, as well as the fabrication and preparation of rigid substrates. Emphasis will be placed on understanding color relationships and skills mixing paint while using a full color palette. Non-paint based materials for painting, such as fabric, craft supplies, and found objects, will also be introduced.
Through weekly discussions and presentations, students will examine the work of several contemporary painters through the lens of materials, unpacking and becoming increasingly engaged critically with the ways in which materials create meaning, evoke varying histories and expand fundamental and predictable answers to the question: “What is a painting?” These artists will include Ghada Amer, Polly Apfelbaum, Sanford Biggers, Lynette Yiadom Byoake, Torkwase Dyson, Josephine Halvorson, Camille Hoffman, Jennie C. Jones, Glenn Ligon, Meg Lipke, Beatriz Milhazes, Dona Nelson, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Jorge Pardo, Sheila Pepe, and others.
