Course Description

Summary

This course introduces students to the theory and practice of group counseling in expressive arts therapy. Students will learn about the stages of group development, group dynamics, and the roles of the group leader. Techniques for leading therapeutic, psychoeducational, and support groups are covered, and students will participate in experiential learning through group role-plays and discussions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate proficiency in facilitating group counseling sessions that incorporate various expressive arts modalities (visual art, music, movement, drama, and writing) to support emotional expression, self-exploration, and healing.
  • Critically analyze the therapeutic potential of expressive arts interventions in group settings, evaluating how creativity can foster connection, promote resilience, and address issues such as trauma, identity, and psychological well-being.
  • Design and implement group therapy interventions that are sensitive to the cultural, social, and individual needs of diverse populations, utilizing expressive arts therapy to promote empowerment, self-awareness, and personal growth.
