Internship in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Course Description
Summary
The Internship course provides an intensive, supervised clinical experience in a mental health counseling setting. Students are required to complete 600 clock hours, including at least 240 hours of direct client contact, across two semesters. During the internship, students will apply their knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and ethical practices in working with individuals, groups, couples, and families.
Under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional, students will refine their skills in assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and intervention. Emphasis is placed on the integration of counseling theory into practice, professional identity development, and competence in multicultural counseling. Weekly individual and/or group supervision with their on-site supervisor, and along with bi-weekly group supervision with Program Faculty with regular case presentations, will enhance students’ clinical insight, ethical decision-making, and self-reflection. Coursework spans one semester, while Internship and participation in supervision continues until all hours (direct and indirect) are met.
