Course Description

Summary

This course covers the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use disorders. Students will learn evidence-based approaches such as motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and harm reduction. The course also addresses the role of co-occurring disorders, the impact of addiction on families, and ethical issues in substance abuse counseling.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze the etiology and progression of substance use disorders and their impact on individuals, families, and communities, demonstrating competence in using evidence-based approaches such as motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and harm reduction strategies to treat substance use disorders.
  • Assess the role of co-occurring mental health disorders in substance use and integrate treatment approaches for both.
  • Evaluate the ethical and legal considerations specific to substance abuse counseling, including confidentiality, mandatory reporting, and client autonomy.
