Course Description

Summary

This course addresses the assessment, diagnosis, and integrated treatment of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, with a focus on community-based service delivery. Students receive training in evidence-based approaches such as motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and harm reduction strategies. Emphasis is placed on understanding the continuum of care through the American Society of Addiction Medicine levels, the use of medication-assisted treatment, and strategies for integrating mental health and addiction services.

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct comprehensive assessments and formulate differential diagnoses for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders in community mental health settings.
  • Evaluate models of integrated care and articulate strategies for coordinating mental health and addiction services across the continuum of care, demonstrating ethical decision-making and cultural responsiveness in community contexts.
  • Design and justify integrated treatment plans utilizing evidence-based practices—including motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and harm reduction—tailored to the needs of diverse clients in community-based settings.
