This production course introduces students to the fundamentals of working in video and the language of film form. Drawing on the energy, intensity and criticality of avant-garde film and contemporary video art practices, students will complete a series of projects exploring dimensions of cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing and sound design before producing a final self-determined project. Concepts crucial to time-based media such as apparatus, montage and identification will be introduced through screenings, discussions and texts by a diverse range of artists, filmmakers, and theorists.

Human mobility has been an inherent human condition throughout history. From earliest human history, women and men have migrated in search of a better life, to populate other places on the planet, or to escape and survive human-made or natural dangers. Today migration is a fact of life for an increasing number of people around the world: there are more than 281 million migrants that cross borders, about 71.2 million that are internally displaced and around 40 million seeking asylum. Almost half of them are women.

It is a commonly felt experience, in our current age of climate crisis, misinformation, pandemics, declining birth rates, late-stage capitalism, and the apparent twilight of democracy, etc., that we are living through (or at, or near) the end of the world. Where do we look for precedents for this feeling? To what extent does this dark life imitate art, or vice versa? Where does ‘dystopia’ end and realism begin?

This is a laboratory for making a mini dance project that can be developed within the short time frame of 3 weeks, right at the start of the term. Students will be working with others in the class to make, teach, and rehearse selections of movement material, culminating in a project that may be shown in Dance Workshop. This is an opportunity for working with instincts, for finding quick solutions and perhaps creating a base for future work.

A Food Citizens Methodology Workshop: Social Kitchen for Collective Wellness — APA4316.01

This class will investigate meaningful pedagogical approaches to Food Studies. Building on the various “Social Kitchen” activities previously pursued at Bennington College through classes, FWT initiatives, internships, work study, extracurricular activities and independent research undertaken by Bennington College students,  we will reexamine the “Social Kitchen” space and its function as a pivotal hub for cultural expression, collaboration, social cohesion, and collective wellness.

Actions in Practice employs Sidra Bell's CONTEMPORARY SYSTEMS, an interior and material approach to movement that encourages provocative thought and an immersive approach to the subject matter of the body. Food and Politics: A Food Citizens Methodology Workshop — APA4160.01

This class will investigate various pedagogical approaches to food studies by examining curriculums, topics and discourses being taught at some academic institutions. More importantly, we will put focus on researching art collectives, contemporary civic engagement practices, and other non-institutional models developed by creative practitioners and activists, which engage with food as a conduit to undertake social, political and cultural identity issues and to enhance their community cohesion.

The BC American Jazz Combo explores jazz standards that have become signature works by some of America’s most innovative and enduring composers within the jazz lexicon. Students will explore works by Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Chick Corea, Charles Mingus, and others. Students will develop their sight-reading, improvisation, interpretation, and arranging skills while building community through collaboration and expression. Additional exploration of Broadway and Film themes that have become classic additions to the jazz lexicon will be considered.

This Scriptorium, a “place for writing,” functions as a class for writers interested in improving their critical essay-writing skills. We will read to write and write to read. Much of our time will be occupied with discussion, writing, and revising—essai means “trial” or “attempt”—as we create new habits and strategies for our analytical writing. We will write in various essay structures with the aim of developing a well-supported thesis; in addition, we will revise collaboratively, improve our research and citation skills, and study grammar and style.
